I did consider applying to SOMLG but my activity level is so low I figured it would be unsatisfying for all concerned. And I also figured it would be as dead as every other decaying, moldering corp(se) that I've joined (and left) recently.
Too bad, really, as it seemed like a good concept. But I've been playing with the same small group of friends for three years now minus my time in fa. We've conquered districts, lost them, did it all again, grieved for a death, watched our alliance go from almost nothing to 90% of mh to almost nothing again and ate now using our districts to pay random newbros because why not.
I would say your observation is not entirely accurate.

Became friends with a few as we went along. But it all fell apart after FF2014. Some dispersed and the rest left the game. I guess I'm still a bit bitter about it. It's difficult to find those enduring groups if the group wasn't already established at the outset. I believe many of you had dispersed, hadn't you? Then you all came back when your friend beeswax suddenly died. Who needs tags when you have a massive group text and alt curious with max cp? Non one week ever know the true number of districts we hold

That doesn't sound like a small group of intimate friends to me. my bad, we talk every day, we all have our number, and when.maylar gets on things get VERY intimate
